Ongoing project

Avocado biosecurity capacity building (AV25012)

Key research provider: University of Queensland (UQ)

Start date: 15 April 2026
End date: 17 February 2031

This project is building the avocado industry’s biosecurity capability by improving the detection and diagnosis of highpriority pests and diseases.

The work builds on earlier phases of the Avocado Industry Biosecurity Capacity Building project, which developed diagnostic tools for key threats including laurel wilt, avocado sunblotch viroid, avocado scab, Persea mite and avocado seed moth. Previous phases also provided diagnostic support for national surveillance, quarantine activities and pest incursion responses.

By improving access to reliable diagnostic tools and expert support, the project will strengthen industry preparedness, reduce biosecurity risks and support continued production, movement and market access for Australian avocados.
