Papaya market supply data capture and analysis (PP20003)

Key research provider: Papaya Australia
Publication date: Tuesday, June 17, 2025

What's it all about?

From 2022 to 2025, Papaya Australia collected data on weekly production volumes of red papaya and yellow paw paw from the primary growing regions of North Queensland. The goal was to establish a consistent and reliable dataset to better understand production trends and support more informed decision-making.

Challenge

The Australian papaya industry supplies fruit year-round yet lacks consistent visibility over total market volumes dispatched throughout the season. This knowledge gap limits the industry’s ability to respond to market shocks, seasonal gluts, or disruptions such as extreme weather. It also makes it difficult to cross-reference actual production volumes with levy receipts. Improved insight into dispatch volumes could support more consistent product flow, assist in quantifying impacts of supply chain events, and provide a stronger foundation for strategic marketing and production decisions.

Response

Weekly data collection began in July 2022, capturing the number of pallets of red papaya and yellow paw paw dispatched from key growing areas, including both the Coastal and Tableland regions of North Queensland. Dispatch data was further broken down by destination state. In parallel, wholesale and retail price data were also collected to provide additional market context.

Production volumes were estimated using reports from transport companies on the number of pallets sent to key eastern seaboard markets, with a standard assumption of 800 kg of fruit per pallet. This methodology enabled more accurate estimates of total production by region.

Collected data was distributed weekly (with a one-week delay) to growers, industry stakeholders, Hort Innovation, and transport companies. Highlights were also published in the Papaya Press e-newsletter.

Benefit

This project has empowered growers with timely insights to guide harvesting decisions and market targeting strategies. For the wider industry, the data has improved oversight of supply conditions, helping to anticipate and manage periods of oversupply or undersupply.

In addition, this level of transparency supports biosecurity preparedness and food safety awareness by enabling better tracking of product flows. Over time, consistent reporting is expected to contribute to steadier production volumes and more predictable pricing, benefiting both consumers and producers.

The project also offers long-term strategic benefits, including:

  • Enabling more accurate cross-checking of levy collections with actual production
  • Supporting SIAP budgeting and planning
  • Identifying trends in regional production to guide future investment, variety development, and marketing
  • Strengthening evidence that production data can enhance growers' marketing and operational decisions

Reliable production data fosters a better-informed, more resilient industry, capable of adapting to change and positioning itself for sustainable growth.
